NARROW NOSES THROUGH CRYSTAL CORTISONE
What is hidden behind the beautiful name crystal cortisone and how crazy and at the same time dangerous this new trend in plastic and aesthetic surgery is, we would like to explain in more detail in this blog post. The social media always report about curious trends in cosmetic medicine, in addition to cat eyes, you can currently observe the trend of “narrow noses without surgery”. YouTuber and Insta-starlets talk about a positive effect, a defined nose without surgery.
BUT WHAT IS BEHIND IT?
A nose narrowing is usually done by means of surgical intervention. Afterwards, a nose splint must be worn for at least 2 weeks and it takes until the nose is swollen down and the new shape is visible. Therefore, it is only an understandable wish of patients to achieve a narrower nose even without surgery. This new method is still relatively unknown and is only offered by a few clinics/doctors – because crystal cortisone is not without controversy.
But how does this treatment work or where are the risky consequences?
Cortisone injections have been used in medicine for a very long time, for excess scarring or for lump formations caused by injections. In this case, cortisone is used locally to reduce tissue.
Treatment of the nose with crystal cortisone
In the novel treatment of “crystal cortisone”, cortisone in liquid, crystal form is injected into the sides of the nose. The treatment aims to inject cortisone into the soft tissue of the nose to reduce the tissue, dissolve the excess nasal tissue and thus reduce the size of the nose. By injecting it with pinpoint accuracy and massaging it in, tissue is targeted to be broken down. This sounds harmless, but has strong side effects. Only pre-operated noses should be treated, where further surgery is ruled out. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, takes only 15 minutes and “promises” an immediate and harmonious beautification of the nose.
THESE ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS
The nose consists of skin, fat, muscle, cartilage, bone and the mucous membrane tissue. The dangerous thing with crystal cortisone is that the fragile anatomy of the nose between muscle, cartilage, soft tissue, fat tissue is destroyed uncontrollably. At high dosage or after repeated application, the skin and cartilage framework take irreparable damage. Cortisone does not function like a “Lego construction set”, in that one can reduce tissue in a very targeted manner, but in some cases uncontrollable tissue destruction occurs. If this affects the mucosa or the cartilaginous architecture, it can be particularly dangerous. Repeated cortisone injections can also lead to severe thinning of the skin, which is irreversible. Something similar can be observed after long-term use of nasal sprays containing cortisone; the nasal mucosa and septum develop holes.
ANOTHER DISADVANTAGE
Surgical nose correction is not possible after the cortisone injection. The skin is thinner after the injection, blood circulation is reduced and the tissue is less stable.
Conclusion: Injecting cortisone into our nose to make it smaller for aesthetic reasons is something we view extremely critically. Especially when these treatments are offered by people who are not familiar with the correction of noses and are poorly trained. If one decides to have a narrower nose by means of cortisone injections, one must be aware of the side effects and risks. Time will show that we will probably see a lot of irreversible noses in plastic surgery offices.
Should one feel that he or she cannot live without cortisone in the nose area, seek advice and treatment in this regard only from experienced physicians. In experienced hands, the risks are generally lower than with newer providers of medical aesthetics. Procedures in the nose area are not part of our expertise, but we can make recommendations if needed.
SUMMARY
We do not advise crystal cortisone and recommend surgery or modeling with fillers depending on the condition of the nose.
