Lip wrinkles are fine creases that appear directly on the lips. They are also called perioral wrinkles, pleated wrinkles, accordion wrinkles or smoker’s wrinkles. They run vertically from the upper lip towards the nose, or from the lower lip towards the chin (mentolabial folds). Although these mouth wrinkles are mostly short and fine, they have a great effect on the overall facial expression – lip wrinkles are clear signs of an aging face and leave a slightly frustrated facial expression. An additional unpleasant side effect of lip wrinkles is the running of the applied lipstick in the small furrows. For this reason, many people consider whether it would not be advisable or more aesthetic to have their lip wrinkles treated. Because the result not only makes the appearance younger, but also makes the affected person look much fresher. Experience has shown that it is advisable to start the treatments as early as possible, preferably at the time when the wrinkles are just beginning to appear.
REASONS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF LIP WRINKLES
Age plays a decisive role in the development of wrinkles in general – and therefore also in the development of lip wrinkles. The subcutaneous fatty tissue becomes weaker and weaker and the skin loses collagen and elastic fibers – there is a loss of firmness of the skin. Â At the same time, our facial expressions put a lot of stress on the mouth area. If the muscle activity is increased, wrinkles in this region form more quickly. For this reason, lip wrinkles are often referred to as smoker’s wrinkles, since smoking makes the lips pucker and this movement promotes the formation of lip wrinkles. But sooner or later, non-smokers are also affected by the natural aging process. Furthermore, genetic predisposition and also UV radiation play a significant role in the formation of wrinkles.
COMMON METHODS FOR THE TREATMENT OF LIP WRINKLES
Chemical peels
In general, chemical peels can be used to treat mild to moderate wrinkles. However, this treatment method is not offered in our practice because of the possibility of pigment displacement.
Plasma technology from PlexR
PlexR® is a newly developed medical device for skin treatment. It works with plasma from ionized gas, which produces microablation. We also do not offer this treatment method at The Aesthetics, as the plasma pen heats up to 100 degrees Celsius, which can cause long-lasting swelling and hyperpigmentation.
Ellipse Nordlysâ„¢Laser
The new Ellipse Nordlysâ„¢Laser is equipped with five selective IPL wavelengths, a long- and short-pulsed Nd:YAG laser, and a FRAX 1550 and is a fixed part of our practice. Hundreds of microscopic heat columns are lasered into the deeper skin layer. Where these many, externally invisible wounds occur, new skin, new fibers and new collagen are formed. The skin is rebuilt as the wounds begin to heal, new connective tissue is created, and it shines anew. There are many applications, including fine wrinkles on the face.
Baby Botox
Baby Botox is a procedure in which injections of mesotherapeutic solution and botulinum toxin in high dilution are applied intradermally into the skin. Baby Botox is applied into the surface layer of the skin and not into the muscle. This prevents the muscles from being tightened too much and the desired tightening of fine wrinkles occurs. Nevertheless, the original facial expression is maintained. This treatment method is also an integral part of our practice.
Hyaluronic acid
In our practice, too, the most common method of smoothing lip wrinkles is injecting hyaluronic acid into the lip line. However, this treatment not only smoothes the wrinkles, but also gives the skin more tone, is better moisturized and has more elasticity. The decisive factor for a beautiful and natural result is that the treating physician treats 100 percent of the correct skin layer and also uses the correct hyaluronic acid thickness for this purpose. Another, particularly positive, side effect of a hyaluronic acid injection is that it simultaneously leads to an increase in volume of the upper lip, which restores its natural curvature. This effect is explained by fibroblast stimulation, which changes the elasticity.
CONCLUSION
According to the 4D concept, our practice focuses on individual treatment of your lip wrinkles. Depending on the extent of the wrinkles, a combination of the treatment methods we offer (laser, baby Botox, hyaluronic acid) may be most effective, or just one of the options. In a joint consultation, we look forward to determining the most suitable treatment concept for you.
